Hearing Tests

What to expect during a hearing test

Getting a hearing test for the first time in a while can be intimidating if you’re not familiar with the process. At Hoffman Hearing Solutions we want to ensure our patients are at ease and informed of all service processes that we provide. So, let’s discuss what you should expect when having a hearing test conducted.

The Pre-Assessment

Upon arriving for your scheduled hearing exam appointment, you will be greeted by our front office staff and be asked to fill out new patient forms. These forms will ask questions regarding your personal information, medical history, and insurance information. Once completing all necessary paperwork, our hearing care professional will begin by asking you a few questions concerning your current state of hearing. Question topics can include areas you struggle to hear in, and any previous medical issues involving your ears. Next, they will use an otoscope to look inside your ears, by doing this our hearing care professional evaluates the health of your ear canal and eardrum, as well as ensuring your ear canal does not contain built-up earwax.

The Evaluation

A hearing test is conducted within a sound-treated room or booth to assure an accurate test. Once seated within the booth or room, you will be given a pair of headphones to put on. Through these headphones you will hear a series of beeping tones, when you hear a beeping tone you will be instructed to push a button indicating that you heard that tone. This test is performed to find the softest sounds you can hear at each pitch. Next, you will be asked to repeat a series of words, and this test is used to determine the softest level you are able to understand and repeat speech. You may also be asked to repeat entire sentences while there is background noise present to evaluate how you hear in various listening environments.

The Results

Finally, our hearing care professional will go over all the test results with you. They will take the time to ensure that you understand your specific level of hearing loss, as well as what could happen if your hearing loss goes untreated. At Hearing Hoffman Solutions, we go over all the information given in the results of the test and make a recommendation on what the next steps should be, and what would be the best option for your hearing loss needs. At this point, it is then your decision on whether to take those next steps, and if you decide that this is the right decision for you, we will work with you to find a personalized treatment plan.
